Shadow of Light Demo 7  This is my latest released demo for a role-playing game I'm developing.  Read more information and tell me what you would like to see here.

Shadow of Light Updates

Since the game is being rebuilt, nothing will be listed here until the next release.

Soon to come...

The engine is being completely rebuilt, due to the way it's currently programmed, which isn't as efficient as it could be.  The new updates are what I'm planning to include in the demo, not just what will be "added".  Please keep in mind that these things may change, and some may be put off until later if I so decide.

These are things that are planned and a bit thought out possibly, but not a priority and probably not even officially started on.

These are things being worked on, but that haven't really had much done on it.

These are things that are more underway and approximately half-way finished.

These are things that are nearly done or are possibly already done but need to be tested more extensively.

These are things that have been basically put in, but will most likely have a few improvements/changes made to them later, either in terms of working or in terms of look.

These are things that are done for the next demo, but may be changed or added to, later on down the line.

Things in parentheses are things being described in more depth, these will especially be included in "yellows" and "yellow-greens" for more updates or may be included to make something more clear.

  • Basic combat system including dodging, blocking, better animation, and a more final system of attack bar charge speed.  (A more advanced fighting system will be under constant construction later on, this is the main project for The Shadow of Light, but since the game is very basic currently, this won't be being seriously worked on until later.)
  • Movement system completely re-done.
  • New display, including separate windows that may be closed and brought up separately.  (The basic inventory is done, but needs to be put to a real test, and will probably have a few touch-ups on it.)
  • At least one enemy that will spawn, fight, and drop useful items just like a normal monster would in a completed game.
  • Better environment, like more natural-looking plants, and terrain changes.  (More drastic terrain changes, like getting closer to a beach, won't be added until much later.)
  • Detailed particle systems for burning fires and spells. (For those of you unfamiliar with this term, a particle system is basically a system built into a game that gives off more random visual effects, making things like fire and explosions look more natural.  The basic part of this is almost done, but this won't be implemented for spells for a while.)
  • A basic food creation system that will later develop into a huge engine allowing you to make anything from healing potions, to poisons, to buffing food, to acids.
  • More info may be added later, and this list will be updated as often as possible.

Later to come...

Basically, this is a list of some things I've been thinking about, but not working on because of other updates I'm already working on.  This list is extremely subject to change.

  • No more classes!  Characters will be fully customizable.  You will have full control over your stats and will also be able to follow one or more of several different paths, from becoming a maniacal wizard to becoming a faithful paladin, or from becoming a melee tank to becoming an expert ranger.  Read more about this and the food creation system at the forums(link located at top of page).
  • Do things like create potions, farm, fish, forge weapons, and more!
  • Talk to people in town and do quests, like avenging the... oh wait... I wanna save that for later...
  • Battle all sorts of animals like dragons, giant spider-like creatures, gigantic bees, smilodons, and more!
  • Cast powerful spells that can both inflict damage and hinder your opponents' fighting abilities!
  • Use things like arrows, throwing knives, and spears to inflict initial damage!
  • Enchant or get enchanted weapons and armor!

 Bestiary

This is an unfinished bestiary, full of different monsters that will soon be added to the game.

Sphyder (spider-likes had a name change)

This spider-like creature has only six legs, with claws on all of them.  The sphyder is somewhat awkwardly designed, making it slow and overall ineffective in combat.  The royal city guard tends to ignore them as they are practically training dummies and are left for apprentice adventurers.

Phyder

The phyder is another spider-like creature, which is believed by many local tribes and races to have evolved from the sphyder, however, we believe it to possibly be a different kind of monster, even though it is so similar to the sphyder.  The phyder has a fiery red color, hence the name sounding like the word "fire", with its front two legs placed closer to its head, allowing it to strike with more technique and power.  Its legs and body are also surrounded by a shell-like material, which, in turn, provides it with more protection than that of the sphyder.

Phyman

The phyman is a creature that appears to be another spider-like, but is technically regarded as a separate form of being because of its different structure and behavior.  Although it looks more like a sphyder because of its color, its structure is closer to that of the phyder, but also looks and behaves much like a man.  It stands upright on its back two legs, its front two legs are actually more like antennae, and its middle legs are used as arms.  The phyman has claws on its middle and front legs, and its back legs have more flattened ends, like feet.  Phymen are very strong, tough creatures, but are slow and lack all elemental resistance.

 Honeybee

The honeybee does not really make honey, but is called this because it looks so much like a bee, but is not poisonous or otherwise dangerous like the other bee-like creatures.  The honeybee uses its stinger like a sword.  Honeybees are extremely fast and hard to hit, but can be easily dealt with by using one strong, solid shot, because its toughness is so low.(other bee-like creatures to be listed later)

Scorpia

Not neccesarily feminine, the scorpia is called this because it is lesser to the scorpio.  The scorpia is much like a scorpion, but has poisoning and damaging effects from both its mouth AND tail.  Scorpias are balanced creatures with high poisoning effects, which can not only have major effects in a fight, but can also be very annoying or deadly afterwards.

Scorpio

The greater of the scorpion-likes.  Almost the same as a scorpia, except for its larger size, and also its tail, which branches into three ends.  One tail is a magical tail, used for casting various spells, another is a normal tail with poisoning effects, and the other is a more controlled tail which can be used like an arm to hold its victim still, while constantly striking, which can give the scorpio an almost unfair advantage during a fight, even if its opponent is tougher and faster.
